Principal Investigators
Dr. Myeong Jin Ju

Dr. Myeong Jin Ju is the principal investigator of the Computational Ophthalmic Imaging Lab (COIL) at the School of Biomedical Engineering, University of British Columbia. His research is focused on the development of optical imaging systems and signal processing algorithms, with a specific technology concentration on medical imaging and with knowledge translation and applications to preclinical and clinical vision research. Recently, Dr. Ju has been focusing on developing cellular resolution functional retinal imaging system and processing algorithms for quantitatively imaging biological dynamics in human retina, more specifically, to develop new label-free optical imaging to contrast macro to sub-micrometer modulations in retinal tissues to single cell in vivo/vitro under a variety of pathophysiological challenges.
Dr. Zaid Mammo

Dr. Zaid Mammo is a subspecialist in the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of British Columbia. He completed subspecialty fellowship training in medical and surgical retina at the prestigious Edward Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia University, New York. Following this year, he underwent further training in retinal surgery at Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia’s largest and busiest center for retinal surgery training and research. Dr. Mammo’s practice focuses on vitreoretinal surgery and medical retinal disorders, including: diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusions, retinal tears, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane as well as other diseases of the retina and vitreous.
Graduate Students
Mohammad Shahidul Islam is a Ph.D. candidate and Graduate Research Assistant in the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada. He received the B.Tech. (Hons.) in Software Engineering from Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) and the M.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He was a visiting researcher with the KITSUNE nanosatellite project at Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech), Japan, and previously served as an ICT Research Fellow with the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Bangladesh. His research interests include medical imaging and instrumentation, data acquisition and image reconstruction, optical coherence tomography (OCT), RF/microwave technology, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Mr. Islam has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers and is a recipient of the IEEE AP/MTT/EMC Best Paper Awards (2019, 2020). He is a member of the IEEE and serves as a reviewer for journals from IEEE, IET, and the Nature Portfolio.

Tiffany Tse is a Ph.D Candidate in Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, with a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University. Prior to joining COIL, she worked as a Silicon Design Engineer at AMD, where she contributed to next-generation video compression algorithms for video encoder hardware design. With a foundation in image and video processing, Tiffany’s research focuses on 3D computer vision techniques for image registration to track retinal disease progression, and developing optical contrast formation algorithms to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Leveraging her engineering expertise, she strives to make a one-to-many impact in clinical settings through patient-oriented research and innovation. In addition to her engineering career, Tiffany is a classical pianist, accompanist, and content creator, sharing her love for music through performance and teaching.

Jun Song is a Ph.D Student in Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. He received his Bachelor’s degree at Simon Fraser University. Recently Jun has been studying optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of small animal models to investigate retinal and neurodegenerative diseases.

Shrivatsan Rajagopalan is a Ph.D student in Biomedical Engineering. His research work mainly focuses on developing a line-field optical coherence microscopy (OCM) system for ex-vivo human and mouse imaging. He joined the lab as a research intern, and helped to co-develop a visible light point scanning OCM system at the Eye Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital.

Ansel Chen is a Master’s student in Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. His research in Digital Adaptive Optics involves defocus and higher order aberration correction in OCT volumes.

Gerry Song is a Research Assistant working under Dr. Mammo and Dr. Ju in the Department of Ophthalmology. Having a background in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Toronto, his current work involves quantification of different OCTA methods. He is particularly interested in developing rigorous, practical methods that can support translational and clinically relevant questions in ophthalmology. He enjoys working at the intersection of statistics, medicine, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
