Research

Our research focuses on advancing optical imaging technologies and computational methods to better visualize and understand ocular structure and function. By combining engineering, imaging physics, and clinical collaboration, we develop new tools to study retinal and ocular diseases.

Ultra-Widefield Melanin-Contrast Retinal Imaging

We develop ultra-widefield imaging approaches that leverage melanin contrast to visualize retinal pigment epithelium and choroidal structures across a large field of view. These methods enable improved assessment of peripheral retinal and choroidal abnormalities unseen with conventional OCT systems.

Techniques

  • Polarization-diversity optical coherence tomography (PD-OCT)

Applications

  • Choroidal nevi and melanoma
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Pathologic and high myopia
  • Choroidal structural analysis

Retinal and Choroidal Hemodynamics

We investigate retinal and choroidal blood flow dynamics using advanced optical imaging systems. Understanding ocular microcirculation is critical for studying diseases where vascular dysfunction plays a key role.

Techniques

  • Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA)
  • Spatiotemporal perfusion analysis
  • High-speed swept-source imaging (1MHz FDML system)

Applications

  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Choriocapillaris imaging and flow characterization

Computational Methods and Ophthalmic Image Analysis

We develop computational methods to enhance the quality, stability, and interpretability of ophthalmic imaging data. These approaches enable more accurate analysis of large-scale retinal datasets and improve the reliability of quantitative biomarkers extracted from imaging systems.

Techniques

  • 2D and 3D OCT image registration
  • Retinal and choroidal layer segmentation
  • Choroidal vessel segmentation
  • Computational aberration correction
  • Machine learning

Small Animal Retinal Imaging

We apply advanced OCT imaging technologies to study retinal structure and function in small animal models. These systems enable controlled studies of disease mechanisms and evaluation of emerging imaging biomarkers.

Techniques

  • Polarization-diversity optical coherence tomography (PD-OCT)

Models

  • Choroidal neovascularization (CNV)

Ex-Vivo Tissue Imaging

We are developing imaging approaches to study structures of the anterior eye, including the cornea. These efforts aim to extend advanced OCT imaging technologies beyond the retina to enable improved structural and functional assessment of the anterior segment.
